In June 2019, Karakusevic Carson Architects met with St Raph's residents at the Architect Selection Day . We presented our previous experience and discussed how we would engage during the project.
Residents gave feedback on the bidding architects which informed Brent Council's final decision in July 2019 to appoint Karakusevic Carson Architects to design two masterplans; one for infill and one for complete redevelopment, through a co-design process with residents.
The project team set up a resident steering group who named themselves St Raph’s Voice and held three rounds of co-design workshops; one developed a community vision for the masterplans, the next one explored scenarios for infill and the final one looked at redevelopment.
In March 2020 we presented the initial designs before the London lockdown. Over the next few months we worked with St Raph’s Voice to develop the Design Code which we consulted the community on in Summer 2020.
In Autumn 2020 the final two masterplans and design code were published.
The Council have decided to go ahead with the infill proposals and appointed Karakusevic Carson Architects again in July 2021 to progress detailed designs for Phase 1. We kicked off with a public exhibition. Since then we’ve had a workshop on landscape and homes,
an exhibition on the emerging designs
and a workshop on materials.
A series of workshops called Space for Girls were held in the Winter of 2021/22, focusing on making the public realm more welcoming and safe for young women.
In Spring 2022 Karakusevic Carson Architects were appointed again to design a part of Phase 2: a new Community Hub building. A temporary community hub building was opened in July 2022 for the community to use in the meantime. Meetings were held with key stakeholders in August 2022 to discuss the design of the new Community Hub and what was needed.
Two more public exhibitions were held in late summer of 2022, showing the residents the more detailed designs for the Phase 1 homes, whilst also updating on how the designs for the Phase 2 Community hub were developing. We also held a Festive Fete public exhibition in December 2022.
The Phase 1 planning application was submitted in February 2023, which you can view here.
We have been meeting with St Raph’s Voice to discuss the design of the new Community Hub, including workshops on materials and the new landscape.
In June 2023 there’s a summer exhibition showing design updates on the Community hub, and the final designs will be presented in an Autumn Exhibition before the planning submission.
